Drogba was thought to be suffering from minor bruising from intial scans. Drogba was injured in an aerial clash with Manchester United defender Jonny Evans last weekend.
Now, a new X-ray report has indicated otherwise and Drogba could now be out for three weeks.
The Ivory Coast international reported for international duty but will return on Monday for treatment.
His injury will add to Carlo Ancelotti's woes as he has already lost three other first team regulars Ashley Cole, Jose Bosingwa and Frank Lampard to long-term injuries.
